We leave most error reporting turned on when we ship The Property Manager. We discuss this internally periodically, but it continues to be our position that our customers are better off knowing when something is not right.

The vast, vast majority of these errors indicate problems with your Windows system, not with our package. Under ordinary conditions, with a properly functioning Windows system, you should practically never see any of those error messages. Of course, you may run across a bug in our package - it does occur sometimes - but almost always those error messages indicate that there is something about your Windows installation that is not right, most commonly an error in the file system.

If you are getting these messages frequently, then you need to do maintenance on your Windows system because you could be at risk for data loss. You should immediately run scandisk or chkdsk (depending on your Windows version) to clean up and repair your file system. You should also clean out your Temp folders, and defragment your hard drive. Taking these actions will generally cause the errors to stop.

We have also learned that certain viruses and spyware seem to interfere somewhat with our package. Most notably, installing our package on a system that has the Sircam virus will often lead to trouble and may render your system unbootable. We recommend that you obtain some anti-spyware tools such as Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy (both free tools) and use them to clean up your computer. You also should have and use an up to date anti-virus software package, and you should have and use a firewall.

We recommend the Zonelabs ZoneAlarm firewall product. If you look on the CD Rom we sent you, under the folder "goodies" you will find a copy of it.
